Karen Schmitt, Director of Business Affairs

I have been at Solon United Methodist Church for nearly 18 years doing all the financials, office work and “all other duties as may be assigned!”

Kevin and I have lived in the Solon area for 24 years, coming from the town of Elgin in northeast Iowa. We have been married for 38 years and have four daughters and one son; four of them now married so four grandchildren as well that give us incredible joy!

I also work part-time at another position so my free time is much more limited than in years past, but it was of my own choosing to avoid hours of spending time alone in “the empty nest.” But in the free time I find here and there I enjoy flower gardening and garage/Goodwill shopping to add to my many dish, Disney and Christmas collections. I enjoy writing short stories and poetry, and recently had a poem chosen for publication in Lyrical Iowa that earned third honorable mention in humorous verse. Kevin and I also love spending time at home just putzing around, having company and visiting with neighbors and friends.

If I’m going to read a book it will be a recipe book. Since that is the case you will find movies on my bookshelf, mostly Disney movies that are watched over and over. The grandkids give me a good excuse to do this and to add to my Disney movie collection. I also enjoy watching westerns, action adventure, all the Iowa games, and many of the antique shows.

I am not very good about setting goals but enjoy living each day as it comes thanking God for the blessings he has filled it with. So I’m looking forward to the next year to see what that might be for me and my position at Solon United Methodist Church.
